Explore the United State’s Longest Natural Spit, Dungeness Spit. Enjoy walking along the sand looking for sea life in the tide pools and birds in the trees along the way.
What is a Spit?
Dungeness Spit is the United State’s Longest Natural Spit. Which is basically a long skinny beach peninsula. There are not many naturally occurring spits in the United States, so it is definitely a unique experience! Dungeness Spit makes a fun stop in the Olympic Peninsula or a great stop on the way to catch a ferry in Port Angeles. It also a great day trip from Seattle (about a 2 hour and 30 minute drive).
Take the Voice of America Road till it ends, there you will find a parking lot where you will deposit cash (it was around $3) into a box as your pass to the park. Dungeness Spit is a part of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife and is a National Wildlife Refuge.
Choose Your Own Adventure
You will take a short walk through Dungeness County Park and Dungeness Wildlife Refuge. There are two paths, one that is paved and one that runs pretty parallel with the paved path through the trees. So take one path there and a different one back. We saw tons of birds on our walk through the Refuge, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for wildlife.
Then you will emerge to a lookout of the Spit. This is a great place to take a quick picture! Look to the end and see if you can spot the New Dungeness Lighthouse. Also look across the water and see if you can spot the Victoria, BC.
Watch the Waves Roll In
You can choose to walk all or part of the Spit. The whole thing is 6.8 miles long, so we choose to walk part of it and get some really cool pictures before heading back. There is lots of driftwood along the beach which makes for a perfect place to have a seat and watch the waves roll in.
Brunch in Sequim
Make sure to leave yourself some time to check out the town of Sequim, pronounced “Squim.” They also have the most amazing breakfast/brunch restaurant called The Oak Table. We’ve talked about driving back just to go to this restaurant, it was that good. It is very popular, so know there might be a wait, but it is so worth it. Sequim also has a really cute downtown, so it is definitely worth a stop.
