Hurricane Ridge is a large mountainous area in the Olympic National Park. The views from the top are some of the prettiest views you will find in all of Washington. It is absolutely one of my favorite places and is well worth the drive.
Before You Go
Make a pro move and stop at one of the numerous coffee stands around town on your way up. These coffee shacks make coffee that can generally rival Starbucks any day.
It will be significantly colder than you expect. We expected it to be cold, but there was still snow up top, so definitely bring a couple extra layers, especially if you plan to hike around, which I HIGHLY suggest.
Check out the Webcams before you head up. We have found that many times the weather at the top, will be very different than below. This way you get the best opportunity for some amazing views.
Switchbacks with a View
Hurricane Ridge is a definite must stop if you are in the Olympic Peninsula! The drive up to the top has lots of switchbacks, while super scary for someone afraid of heights and falling (cough… ME), they are super pretty. There are lots of turn offs as you drive up and down, so if you see somewhere that looks pretty, pull off and take some breathtaking pictures.
Breathe in the Fresh Air
Once you get to the top of the mountain, there is a really nice visitor center with a small cafe and real restrooms (the only throughout our whole trip). The Visitor’s Center is staffed with park rangers that lead hikes at various times. From the visitor’s center there are some amazing views of the mountains and valleys, so make sure to walk here to get some AMAZING pictures!
Hike of Beauty
Across from the Visitor’s Center is a couple of hiking options. I highly suggest the High Ridge Trail. I think it gives you the best views of all the hikes. It was the most uphill hike we took the whole trip, but it wasn’t that bad, you will want to stop along the way to get pictures anyway. Seriously it is gorgeous!
The Other Side
We then connected into the Cirque Rim Trail, this trail gives you stunning views on the opposite side of the mountain and on a clear day you can see all the way to Canada. This was another trail I would definitely not miss, the views from up here are just incredible.
Be on the lookout for wildlife as you drive up. We some some deer on the way up. This would also be a great place to bring a pair of binoculars on a clear day as you can see all the way to Canada.
What to do Next?
If you have time, Hurricane Ridge is conveniently located with a lot of options on what to do next. Some of my favorite close by places are the towns of Port Angeles and Sequim where they have some amazing food! There are also a lot of Olympic Peninsula sights within driving distance, Lake Crescent, Sol Duck Falls, and Dungeness Spit. You are also not too far from the Pacific Ocean and can even hit up a beach if you are feeling a road trip!
